What is the ECO4 Scheme?

The Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) scheme is a UK Government initiative designed to make homes more energy-efficient, reduce fuel poverty, and cut carbon emissions. Who Qualifies for ECO4 Funding?

You could qualify for 100% free home energy upgrades if any of the following apply:

Income-Based Eligibility

You may qualify if your total household income is below £31,000 per year, or if you receive any income-related benefits such as:

  • Universal Credit

  • Housing Benefit

  • Income Support

  • Pension Credit (Guarantee or Savings)

  • Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)

  • Employment & Support Allowance (ESA)

  • Working Tax Credit or Child Tax Credit

Health & Vulnerability Eligibility

Households may also qualify if anyone in the home is classed as vulnerable to the cold, including:

  • Elderly residents (aged 65 or over)
  • Children under 5
  • Respiratory conditions (such as asthma, COPD, or chronic bronchitis)
  • Cardiovascular conditions (including heart disease or high blood pressure)
  • Individuals with disabilities or chronic illnesses

If anyone in your home falls under these categories, you could be eligible for free insulation or renewable heating upgrades through the ECO4 scheme.

Property Eligibility

Your home itself plays an important role in whether you qualify for ECO4 funding. The scheme is designed to help improve low-efficiency properties that lose heat easily or rely on outdated heating systems.

To qualify, your home must meet the following criteria:

  • Your property is privately owned or privately rented (you’ll just need your landlord’s permission before any upgrades begin).

  • The property has a low Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of D, E, F or G, meaning your home currently struggles to retain heat efficiently.
